This handsome, cream saddleback GSD is Magnus.
A local Police Department found him abandoned on the streets. We do not
know how long he was wandering but it could have been a while based on the
wear and tear on his paws when we got him. His paws have healed nicely.
He did not have a name and our staff named him Magnus due to his size and
“big” personality.
We believe he is 1 to 1.5 yrs old with a puppy personality. He is large,
approximately 65 to 70 lbs. and very “buff”. If he were human, he would be a
weight lifter.
Magnus has a LOT of energy. He thrives on exercise and activity. He loves
long walks and will play forever if allowed. He loves his “chicken”. He is by
no means a couch potato but does settle once he has burned off his energy.
When he first arrived, everything was exciting and interesting to Magnus. He
always wants to know what’s going on and be part of the activity. He became
less so once he started training. He is still very nosy.
His mind as well as his body needs exercise. He is very, very smart and picks
up training quickly. He loves working obedience. If he does not have a job,
he will find one. He loves figuring things out and puzzle games.
When first meeting people, Magnus is interested. He will engage but remain
appropriately aloof but become deeply loyal once he gets to know you.
Magnus will thrive in an active family with solid experience German
Shepherd Dog experience. He needs a leader who can provide structure,
consistency and boundaries. Magnus is at his best in an environment that
can provide daily exercise and mental stimulation (training, puzzle games,
long walks).
We do not know if Magnus was ever exposed to children. Due to his size and
energy, we feel his best fit would be a home without young children (infants
or toddlers) Older, "dog-savvy" children will be considered on a case-by-case
basis.
He has very high prey drive so a home without cats or other small animals is
best for him. Other dogs react to Magnus because of his energy level and he
reacts in return. We are working with Magnus on neutrality.
Magnus completed our Board and Train program and did great. His focus is
better now and continues to work on impulse control and learning new
behaviors (training never ends!) His down-stay is good but he still “vibrates.”
Magnus is up to date on vaccinations. He is currently intact and will be
neutered prior to his adoption. If we find a family sooner, we will cover his
neutering after he is adopted so he can recover in with his new family.
As we do with all our rescues, we will schedule several meetings with
Magnus and applicant families. We want him to meet everyone living in the
household. Once a match is made, we will provide handling lessons with
Magnus prior to the family taking him home. GSRRC provides free training
for life for all our rescue dogs.
We do not adopt out during the holidays due the activity level and visitors in
most households. Dogs need a low-key decompression and bonding period
with their new families before being exposed to other family members and friends. We will consider adoption during the holidays on a case-by-case basis for homes that are quiet and less active.
If you or someone you know is interested in adopting Magnus, please
complete an adoption application.
